Traditional language laboratories existed in one basic form for over 40 years. They consisted of an instructor's remote monitoring and control console, with individual student tape recorders and headsets located in isolated carrels around a large room.

Computer technology created a paradigm shift in the language lab concept in the early 1990's. Linguatronics was founded upon this new paradigm and was the first system provider to develop completely digital language translation lab systems built around modern computers.
